The book I'm recommending is "A Marine Remembers," which is the memoir of Samuel Rimler, who emigrated to the US from Logov, Poland in 1920 and joined the Marines as a teenager in 1930. In these vignettes, he describes what it was like to be a New York Jew in the Marines when there were only 17,000 men in the Corps, most of them Southerners. His memoir takes us through those years and then through his service as a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy doing convoy duty in the North Atlantic during World War II.

The story of a grunt from start to finish, very graphic, it changed my outlook on life and war. I hate reading but once I started on this book i couldn't put it down, literally.  I'm just a 16 yr old kid but this book matured me and made me think.

You might be interested to know -- "You're Stepping on My Cloak and Dagger" -- the best-selling book by my husband, Roger Hall, about his experiences in the OSS in World War II -- will be reprinted in April 2004 by the U.S. Naval Institute Press.
